As the President of CircAid Medical Products I am consantly reminded of the need for more and better treatment for Lymphedema worldwide. I have been involved with lympedema and its treatment for over 20 years. The biggest issue we face as a manufacture and marketer of products for patients who suffer from Lymphedema is first lack of education to identify the disease and secondly lack of knowledge of how to treat the disease. As an NHS employee I feel strongly that Glasgow university retains its school of nursing. In the current climate of cutbacks it is difficult enough to gain accredited training in specialists areas such as Lymphoedema.

As an oversee student, I need a great support in addition to academic training. The differences in Culture and ways of learning took me a lot effort to adopt. However, my professor and the teachers and workers of nursing school provide me a very kind and gentle support. Because of this humanity atmosphere I can finally finish my tough training and able to graduate. The nursing school is a crucial part in my life. I believe the value of the school to the University is significant.

If sorting the economy and making some cuts is what the Government needs to do, fine. There will be ways of cutting costs, balancing the books and this will take time. Closing Glasgow University School Of Nursing may seem a quick, easy way to save some money (exactly how much, is debatable) but at what cost!!
A University School Of Nursing of this quality cannot be made or replaced over night. When the economy does recover, it will already be gone for EVER.
A memorable legacy of this Government.
Not one I would want to be remembered by.

#88 Lymphoedema Training at Glasgow University School of Nursing

I have been undetaking the Graduate Diploma in Lymphoedema Management for the past 3 years. I live in Lincolnshire and found travelling up to Glasgow easier than going to Leeds as it is the closest course available. There are not many schools of nursing to provide this sort of specialsit training and I have been proud and honoured to be accepted for the training. My colleague has recently completed her Leduc training but felt it only just scratched the surface and she needs to have more in depth training, so has enrolled with Glasgow University to complete the Graduate Diploma in Lymphoedema Management while self funding. This would be a travisty to the world of lymphoedema if the school of nursing closed as lymphoedema is such an unrecognised condition which affect thousands of people , especially since Moffatt et al (2003) suggests that chronic oedema is a common problem in the community with over 100,000 patients suffering in the UK alone, many of whom will not be attending a specialist clinic. These courses enable practitioners like myself to gain the knowledge and understanding to help recognise these patients and enable treatments to be given to otherwise an under recognised condition.

This is entirely inappropriate. It is quite clear that the university are thinking like a financial business and not as a service to education. The Nursing school I understand is not making a loss and is contributing valuable research.

The medical scool however may generate more money, but this is largely due to drug related research, which nursing / chaplaincy can never generate , but is just as valuable in patient care. Think with your heads please and not with your wallet. AHP and nursing professions have improved in glasgow markedly over the past 10 years, mainly due to co-operative work and the right minded people steering research and clinical practice. Taking this away is like diabling someone's arm. It makes life and progress so much more difficult. Your nursing department's profile has steadily risen over the last 10 years. Shame you can't recognise this within your own university.

I am strongly opposed to any cuts to courses at the University of Glasgow. I am disgusted by the manner in which the University's Senior Management Group have dealth with the whole issue - many staff and students first heard of the proposals from an article in the Glasgow Herald, consultation panels for the threatened courses are headed by members of the same SMG who made the proposals in the first place and the SMG have refused calls by both the University Senate and the Student Representative Council to include student reps on consultation panels. In addition, the SMG have already begun the consultation process on a number of courses, despite a call by the University Senate to postpone any decision until after the Scottish Government elections in May and until the level of savings made by voluntary redundancies is confirmed.

In the case of nursing, the justification offered by the SMG for the proposed scrapping of the Nursing course was that UoG Nursing Graduates are 'struggling to find employment in Nursing'. This is simply not true - in 2010 UoG Nursing Graduates enjoyed a 99% employment rate, with 100% employability in 2009. This shows either poor research or blatant lies from the SMG, neither of which would be at all encouraging particularly as it is the University's Vice Principal who is heading the consultation panel for Nursing.

The lymph system is the bodies first line of defense againt infection!! and yet so little is known about the problems that can ocur with a lymph system that has been comprimised...especially with post cancer patients who struggle to get adequate help..... keeping the School open will be so beneficial to so many people!

this is an absolute travesty the school is in jeopardy! Lymphoedema education is sparse enough and the management of patients with lymphoedema and chronic oedema is rare, this will only get worse!

The University of Glasgow will be making a huge mistake if the SMG go ahead with this decision. The nursing students from here are very well thought of within the NHS as are the graduates, which is displayed in the employment statistics. This course offered here is unique and the support of students from staff is invaluable. Today is International Nurses Day I hope that the SMG recognise nursing as a profession and the valuable place this course has within the training for nurses.
