Removal of No Motorhome Signs

A small minority of people wish to evacuate campers and motorhomes from the Foreland. For generations they have parked here and came back year after year and contributed to the village economy. Leave them be and concentrate or more important issues like the state of our roads etcKim Mawer (Ballantrae, 2022-08-15)

I grew up in this village, for as long as I can remember I’ve seen any type of vehicle on the grass(camper vans, cars, motorcycles, etc) enjoying the lovely view. Seeing what a true village life is like. This is a village like no other.Heather Lyle (Crosshill, 2022-08-15)

I strongly disagree with the signs. Having parked my caravan on the grass at the Foreland I encountered firsthand abuse from a resident who for some reason felt they owned the view in front of their house. We should be encouraging tourism and the economic benefits it brings to the village not discouraging it!!!Jill Dunlop (Colmonell, 2022-08-15)

It’s not right, waste of tax payers money, people have been camping here since before most of us were born and they do no harm! They bring tourists to our small village!Sarah Fearns (Ballantrae, 2022-08-15)

I strongly disagree with these signs being put up and the fact that it will discourage tourists to the village. Seems very underhand and the minority do not speak for meMaureen McIlwraith (Ballantrae, 2022-08-15)

What a waste of tax payers money, I am in my 70’s and for as long as I can remember, we have welcomed campers to the village! They return year after year and these small minded people who want them gone need to take a long hard look at themselves! Do they themselves not go on holiday?Robert McIlwraith (Ballantrae, 2022-08-15)

As someone who was actually born on the Foreland 54 years ago and attended the local school and brought up my family here, campervans have been coming to this village and camping at the Foreland as far back as I remember. Any negative issues we have had in all these decades you could count on one hand. The people in these vans have become an important part of the.local economy, spending money in our local shop, charity shop, pub, garden centre and buy lobsters from the local fisherman. Many have been coming for years and have made strong bonds and friends in the community. In these times after the pandemic when all the businesses above have struggled financially, it is ludicrous for South Ayrshire Council to erect signs without public consultation and actually useless as they don't cover the grassed area where the campers actually camp (signage does not explain this)and in effect put people off coming into our village and supporting our local economy.Sharon Robertson (Ballantrae, 2022-08-15)

There has never been a problem with motorhomes parking on the road at the foreland. The signs are an utter waste of resources. Camper vans and motorhomes have always parked up on the grass and been welcomed by the village for their contribution throughout the years to the community; financially and in friendship.Wendy williams (Ayr, 2022-08-15)

I have lived in the village for over ten years now. I have understood from when I first visited this village as a vacationer that tourists, holiday vacationers and motor home (small and large) owners have been coming to this village for a long, long time, some of whom are regulars. While living here, I have always found that the people who visit this area are in general friendly, well behaved and always tidy up after themselves. The money that they spend in this area and in particular this village is vitally important and much needed by our small, local businesses, and the majority of the village welcome them. Tourism is an important part of this area's income for many businesses and these sort of signs are not helpful as not only are they pointless, but they also imply tourists are not welcome here as a whole by the village which is not true. It is a very, very small minority that feel that way. The money wasted on these signs could have been spent better elsewhere in the village on other things that would benefit the village as a whole. Since the local council is meant to represent the local community as a whole, this matter should have been discussed openly with the community, and not just decided upon by a few.Melissa Bailey (Ballantrae, 2022-08-15)

I'm signing this petition because I disagree with the no motor home signs being plastered all over lamposts in our wee village... these residents who have had the signs put up are a disgrace to our village...I've lived here for 44 yrs and grew up on the foreland where there was camper vans and motor homes from the top end to bottom end of foreland and not once was there anything said against it... all residents of ballantrae should've had their say as to agree or disagree... these people font own the village and residents need to stand up and tell them this..tourists bring money to our local shop garage garden centre etcChristina Boyd (Girvan, 2022-08-15)

In this day and age it's the majority not the minority that should be heard, but not asking the village people who have been here since the day dot about what their feelings in this matter are is very unprofessionalElaine Curtis (Girvan, 2022-08-15)

Motor homes bring vital business to small villages also residents who own one should be allowed to park outside their homes. It is ridiculous to impose such a rule without consulting the community as tourism is a vital part of our economy.Ann Robertson (Girvan, 2022-08-15)

I am a former resident of Ballantrea and love coming to stay and visit friends and family. I come and visit in my camper van, as it allows me to travel with my dog. I am a sensible and respectful camper and never leave any mess, or cause any bother. I love the village and this is the only way I am able to visit, as I am not in a position to move back at this time. I also give back to the community by visiting the local shop and pub and donation’s to the local charity shop. I think it’s a disgrace what the council are trying to do and will take a lot of business away from such an amazing community.Lorraine Burns (Clydebank, 2022-08-15)

I am fortunate to live in this area and I welcome any visitors who wish to stay and enjoy the hospitality, scenery and envelop the experience I take for granted. During lockdown residents in this area could still enjoy the luxury of having this on their doorstep and it made me realise that there were others less fortunate stuck in inner cities. Therefore I think it is unreasonable to put restrictions in place but I do believe that there should be rules to obey regarding littering and responsible behaviour whilst visiting.Laura Hyslop (Colmonell, 2022-08-16)

I’m signing because I disagree with this restriction. Tourism is important to the local community and in these economically challenging times and following on from covid we should be doing all we can to encourage and welcome visitors to the village - especially if they are choosing to holiday on home ground rather than abroad. My understanding is that these signs were instigated by newcomers to the village. Sadly the same happened with the village clock which after complaints by someone moving next door to it was not allowed to chime after 9pm and now for whatever reason no longer chimes at all (why move next door to it in the first place if you don’t like it?!). Similarly I suspect having achieved these signs the complainers will now be pushing for campers not to be allowed to park at any time - especially as between the hours stated there is very little impact on their view it being dark for the greater part of that time!Jeanie Maxwell (Ballantrae, 2022-08-16)

As a lassie brought up in the village I’mstunned that council has permitted these no motorists between the hours of 2100-0900. I still have family and friends that relay on holiday maker to the village. A small village with a large need for business to thrive surely long stay visiting to the village is paramount to the continuing holidaymakers financial support to the local community.
Surly a few camper vans parked over night don’t cause that much of damage to the location in question to support the need for these signs.

We stayed there a couple of weeks ago. Three women and 4 young children in a motorhome and a van. We have stayed there many times before and were approached by a man who said he was respesenting his neighbours. He said it was private land and the owner was not happy about people parking there and that our insurance would be void. He spoke to us in front of our young children who were then worried about staying there. I listened politely and said we would move later so he was happy and went away with out a fuss. I reassured my children it was fine to stay after he had gone and we stayed the night and had a great time along with the other 4 motorhomes! Please remove these signs and hopefully this individual has not intimidated other people into moving!Rachael Warner (Pinmore, 2022-08-16)

They feel it's wrong that long term Ballantrae residents ( for many generations in my sister in law's case) have had no say on this and I agreeShaun McGuire (Isle of Whithorn, 2022-08-17)

What a waste of funding.. no reason what so ever to stop campervans, being doing it for years with no issues......Kerrie Mcilwraith (Dalrymple, 2022-08-17)

Because the cants that are trying to stop people parking have no right to do so on a public road. 🙄David Mcmaster (Dunragit, 2022-08-17)

Visitors (including motor homes) are important to the Ballantrae economy and those who are courteous and respectful towards the village should always be made to feel welcome. These signs convey completely the wrong impression when we are trying to encourage tourists to visit.Andy McAlpine (Ballantrae, 2022-08-17)

It’s terrible these people trying to force the caravans out when they spend money in the local shops etc they make the place so much more interesting when you speak with themChloe Mcilwraith (Girvan, 2022-08-17)

People work hard for there campers and motorhomes they are taxed insured should be able to park them outside there homes and on any streetAudrey Paterson (Dumfries, 2022-08-17)

Since when did the minority overrule the majority? Camper vans have visited our area for years, with most returning year after year, because of the friendly, warm welcome they receive. They support our local businesses, enjoy our spectacular scenery and everything else in between………..this is how we repay them?? Sad!Janet Falls (Ayrshire, 2022-08-17)

As a local man it is extremely disheartening to see a “few people” trying to change a long standing tradition of campers coming to the village and parking on the Foreland! They return year after year, adding to the local economy. Perhaps these people and the council should concentrate on real issues affecting the village, ie roads, litter, showers for campers and encourage even more tourism!Robert McIlwraith (Girvan, 2022-08-17)

Ballentrae is a beautiful seaside village, people come for holidays and keep returning too. The motorhomes and caravans have been allowed for year's, so why change now. They help the villages economy, by spending there money in the local shops, the garden Centre and the public house. Let them come and stay. Thanks NadsNads Scott (Colmonell, 2022-08-17)

Its wrong that the new-comers to the village should be putting these signs up when the folk who were born and bread in the village want and welcome campervans and tourists to stay!Marie Thomson (Stranraer, 2022-08-17)

I think it's shocking that people can move in to our village and dictate what us villagers have to do the camers have been coming for years without any issuesFrank Mcilwraith (Ballantrae, 2022-08-18)

I am Ballantrae born and bred. I have lived here for 70 years and have never known anyone to have a problem with people camping or parking motorhomes/caravans on the grass along the sea front. Are we to submit to the couple of property owners wishes to deprive people of the chance to appreciate what we have . I have had many lovely chats with campers and they do use the pub/shops etc. Time to act in the defense of the majority of residents and not pamper to the the disgruntled few !Sylvia Mcculloch (Ballantrae, 2022-08-18)

Ballantrae born and breed.39years old. Campers have always come here for as far back as I can remember and parked up on the grass at both ends of foreland. Tourism has always helped support our local economy. They should be allowed to continue there support towards it. If only we had an ice cream shop like the one we lost few years back. As a Community we should be looking at ways to encourage campers and Tourism into Ballantrae not scaring them away.Sean Mcilwraith (Ballantrae, 2022-08-18)

I lived in Ballantrae for 15 years and also have life long connections with the village as my granny was from Ballantrae. I remember the camper vans and visitors being on the Foreland from 50 years ago. I think this should be allowed to continue as they bring revenue to the village. The signs give a very negative impression of a very welcoming village, and I think these should not be allowed to stay when the vast majority of the village population oppose them.Lynn Young (Colmonell, 2022-08-19)
