In Gita’s name: Two Russians beaten up in Gandhinagar

If Bhagavad Gita faced the prospects of a ban in Russia, in an ironic twist two Russians were beaten up in Ahmedabad for the ‘sin’ of seeking to propagate the same sacred religious text in its country of origin.

Two members of Ahmedabad’s Iskcon temple had gone to Sukruti apartments in Anandnagar to propagate the preaching of Bhagavad Gita. Following an altercation, the guards allegedly assaulted them. The two sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital.

Both members were of Russian origin and have been identified as Sherry Pavello and Anand Gopaldas. No complaint has been filed and members of the housing society who intervened after the assault sought to attribute the episode to some misunderstanding.

One of the holiest Hindu scriptures, the Bhagavad Gita recently faced a legal ban and the prospect of being branded as “extremist” literature across Russia.

The situation was retrieved after a Siberian court on December 28 rejected the state plea to ban the Russian translated version of the Bhagavad Gita, saying that the prosecutors’ fears that it promoted “social discord” were unfounded.

Prosecutors had argued that the Russian edition of ‘Bhagavad Gita As It Is’ promoted hatred towards non-believers.
