#251 Change of Calendar

I beleive the deliberate ignoring of the survery results proves that the decsion to change the current calendar is a result of councils members listening to money over people.

#254 August 1st Calendar for 2011-12 school year

What was the point of asking for our vote if you are going to do whatever you please regardless. Next time I vote it WILL NOT BE FOR YOU to hold office!

#255 What does this mean exactly?

"The signatures originated from 1 880 different IP addresses"

Doesnt this mean that only 880 of the address on here are different and the rest are the same?

#1: Tami Gallagher - Balanced school year calendar

Keep in mind that it was only one school board member who suggested and set up the the unscientific survey.  The four board members that voted yes for the later start date, were voting what they promised the voters.

The unscientific survey was requested by ONE board member.  The four board members who voted yes for the later school start were fulfilling the campaign promise they made to the voters who elected them.

#264 TAXPAYERS ONLY

2011-02-22 03:53

If you don't pay taxes in Cobb, you don't have a voice in this.  Sorry teachers that choose to pay taxes elsewhere and educate your kids in OUR County!  It will all work out once the State cuts the education funding AGAIN.   You will get more unpaid days as a result, regardless of the calendar issue.

#258: Ryan Cobb - school year change

Yes, Ryan, they are.  They voted EXACTLY how they said they would when campaigning which is more than the ones who voted this in last year can say.  That's one reason they will be/or are gone.

Glad we have some new board members with integrity

#22: Guest - Re: Re: Calendar

Each of the board members who voted to go back to the traditional calendar (such that it is), were simply keeping the promises made during their campaigns.  And, what makes you think they get paid?  Isn't that a volunteer position?  A thankless one for sure.

Lynnda Crowder-Eagle was the only board member who insisted on the very unreliable survey.  The other board members had nothing to do with it, and can't be blamed for not taking it seriously when their constituents elected them based on the platform of a later start date.

#256: Guest - BOE listen to the people!

There are 106000 children in our district.  1,880 is a SMALL amount to consider.  Should've never been changed in the first place.  Bye bye Lynnda Eagle and David Banks.  Your terms are nearly up!

#251: John Gwaltney - Change of Calendar

By saving millions of dollars in utilities? And gaining tax dollars to better pay our teachers and reduce class size?  I applaud the board members willing to stick to their guns, and vote the way they said they would.  Especially considering there is no evidence that the balanced calendar/breaks in any way boost academic success.

The top ten scoring states in the country (academically) have two things in common.  They all start school in late Aug. or after Labor Day, and they don't finish the semester before Christmas break.  We could learn something from this.

I'm thankful that Angelucci, etc. DID listen to the voters who elected them.  I agree that the calendar never should've been changed in the first place.  We have David Banks and John Abraham to blame...looking to Cherokee as an example?  Fulton County Schools perform higher than Cobb, and they adopted an August 23rd start!

#271 Campaign promises

2011-02-22 04:22

When they were running for the Cobb School board openings, the people of Cobb didn't know much about the "balanced" calednar and were afraid of the unknown. That was a legitimate platform to fun on...Now that we have it, the people of Cobb have decided that they like the "balanced" calendar. Teachers are absent less, student are absent less and everyone enjoys the well deserved time off. Longer summer, more breaks during the year...all the same...more quality time with your kids...family. Much like a family...when the mama is happy, everyone is happy,...when the teachers are happy....everyone will be happy!

#6: Janet Metcalf - August 1 calendar

Janet, what the public didn't know was that only one school board member, Lyndda Crowder, insisted on the survey, that anyone in the world with a computer could take. (and apparently hack the system to vote multiple times). The other board members voted their conscience, and voted how they told their district constituents they would.  They promised if elected to work toward a later school start, which seems to show better academic success, (the higher performing states all start later), and makes so much sense from a financial standpoint - saving significant amounts on electricity during August.

#29: Unbelievable - Board Powers and Responsibilities

NO, they didn't.  They voted EXACTLY how they said they would when they campaigned.  The survey was at the request of 1, YES ONE, Boardmember - Lynnda Eagle.  Wasn't even a credible survey to boot.
