Hygienic circumstances for the tented community e.g. no ablution facilities. This will have an effect on the businesses close by and also residents in adjacent areas. There is littering that causes health issues and can develop into a public health issue because of viral or bacterial infections arising from this.

I am a long time property owner in Durbanville. I have raised the issue of mismanagement of the homeless congregating in Durbanville with the Councillor Theresa Uys years ago in a public meeting. Her response was to send me a threatening letter from her lawyers and have me removed from the Ward Committee. I was right to be concerned, our Durbanville CBD has turned into a dangerous cesspool.

I am greatly concerned that these tents (which were allowed to set up during the Covid pandemic) have not been removed and the number of tents is growing rapidly. If something is not done our beautiful village will become another informal settlement. We cannot allow squatters to ruin areas as there is no infrastructure for them and the authorities are allowing this to happen. I pay high rates and taxes to maintain certain living standards and as such should not have to be subjected to the indifference of the authorities in this matter. Action must be taken to remove and relocate these people.

Durbanville is an upmarket area and we pay upmarket rates. By refusing to keep law and order, local government is devaluating our area and letting us all know that we can do whatever we want, just as these illegal squatters are allowed to do (squat, steal, loiter, litter, damage property, defecate in public and on the graves, harass and threaten people, throw rocks at cars) If the law does not apply to them then it cannot apply to us either. Local government is setting a very dangerous precedent. This has been a growing problem for years and the community is furious from the lack of support or law. If you fail to address this issue then we will ensure you lose Durbanville in the next elections.

Durbanville was always a clean friendly and safe neighbourhood. When total lockdown due to covid happened pekple were given tents and gradually more tents were put up on an open area close to the police station. Mothers used to let their kids walk to Durbanville primary school. Now it is too filthy and they are scared. There is also health risks since the ablution facilities are the field or drains. Property owners who sell adjacent to this area battle to sell or get lower prices than what they purchased for. This sets a president and other parks in neighbourhoods could end up the same. Law enforcement isnt doing anything and there are charities who keep giving these people food and tents which keeps them there.
