Hillcrest was where I competed when I was a teenager and where I train as a masters swimmer and where I prepare for Midmar and swim for good health. It is the only 50m public pool available to swimmers and would be a shame to lose such an iconic place.

It's a facility that is greatly needed in the community. It has been used by the province and country for many many years. To see it neglected and just closed cannot happen. I'm signing because Ethekwini Parks &Recreations Department has squandered money meant for pool chemicals, staff, equipment maintenance and general looking after our public facilities. For the past 2 years there has been changes the pools open for summer 3 months late, hours change late. Temporary life guards and supervisors are not employed timeously nor are they give rheir past contracts they are shorter. Thus not only destroys the lives of those temp life guards it also damages their families who rely on them.working 5 to 8 months on a temporary contract. Now all the funds supposedly saved not paying temp life guards, supervisors, cashiers, cleaners is saved but is not to show anywhere. Where are the funds saved forn2 years during civid and after? Why must kids whose only opportunity is to swim in a public pool taken away? Why haven't they got a contract with rhe pool chemical suppliers?Why did they build a pool down the south coast which isn't ever used? What are they doing about all the learn to swim teachers who work at public pools through KZNAquatics who teach underprivileged kids lts at public pools? What can these teachers do? What are they doing to ensure no more drownings of youngsters? Nothing there fighting us. Pools are the heart of communities in some areas where people get together, make new friends, have fun, exercise and relax. Where can communities donthis now? KZN municipality is an absolute disgrace when it comes to servicing and managing the pools in and around KZN.

The army, police, air hostesses, children, adults and people from all walks of life learn to swim there, train and compete.The buildings and pool are architecturally special and well worth preserving. This pool is part of my history. We walked there from our primary school and I swam all my galas there. I met my husband there. I swam there every day (summer and winter) until my son was born. I’ve stopped going as the change rooms are filthy and the staff hang around and don’t do their job. The parking lot is run by drug dealers. This is just bad management and a disgrace to let this fall into disrepair. Let someone who cares about our health take care of it and restore it to the gem it has always been.
