The true history of black history needs to be taught from a young age. It should be universal knowledge about the inventions and positive contributions made in this world by people of colour. Why the reluctance and the secrecy?

Jillian Edinboro (London, 2020-06-26)

I’m signing this because to be clear this is an important subject for young people to be exposed and educated by, and since this is a unique publication denying it’s availability is preventing knowledge of black British history from moving forward and progressing. You can show you sincerely believe that Black Lives Matter (as much as yours).

I have three grandchildren, age 12, 8, and 3. Am concerned as to where their life will lead them on the UK as I fear the cards is stack against us as blacks, especially our boys .

I’m signing because I am tired of the double standards and hypocrisy some companies have towards Black Artists.

Shade Oladiti (London, 2020-06-27)

Of course it should be republished. It's important for children to know the history - and as a (white) adult I'd be pleased to read it too.

Linda Christie (Ashford, 2020-06-27)

#838

I'm signing because it's essential that a wide variety of perspectives and choices are available to all in in the book industry and not only a white perspective selected by all white deciders as being what your customers want to read.

I SUPPORT THIS PETITION

MARION SCHUMANN (London, 2020-06-27)

It is fundamental that the children of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora see themselves as part of the fabric that makes up the diverse Kingdom of Great Britain.
I was unaware of the existence of this book and would be very happy to buy for my children and as gifts for others.
In the current climate the reprinting of such books may also prove to be commercially successful, which should satisfy the concern of the publisher.

Miguel Smith (Brentford, 2020-06-27)

#847

I'm signing because I recognise the importance of providing children with a real positive context to their history. I hope that you will honour your commitment by making sure that this book and other materials relating to black history are available. The aim is to change attitudes and to do this we need your support.

Erica Alexander (London, 2020-06-27)

#853

the petition addresses points that would truly support the fight against institutional racism: to publish more children books about the history of African and Caribbean Communities in UK and make contracts that are not predatory towards authors.

Ivana Curcic (London, 2020-06-27)

This publisher must publish this history book, we don't want no sell out publishers/mouth piece for propaganda, if the book has sold out every time, this publisher must do as asked by the African Carribean community

I attained a degree in History and Caribbean Studies back in 1997, the only such joint degree available at the time. No surprise, it was subsequently withdrawn, but I can honestly say it changed my life completely in terms of understanding my, and my parent's history. Please make the books and knowledge available to the people that need and want them.

Gillian De Souza (LONDON, 2020-06-27)

This book needs to be re-published as soon as possible. We need to have books for children speaking to the experience of African heritage people in the UK.

I'm signing because Mr. Shelley literally needs to put his mouth where his money is. If he's willing to show he's doing 'the right thing' by making a donation, he should also, 'do the right thing' by re-publishing the book, whilst ensuring the author is correctly renumerated for it. Otherwise, allow him to take it to another publishing house where it will be appreciated. I'm sure they would be happy to rake in the money this book will surely earn.

Do the right thing Mr. Shelley: become the hero; do not remain the villain.

The history of African and Caribbean people is central to the history of Britain. Professor Adi's book is a vital resource that should be available to children through schools, libraries and in their own homes.

I am signing this petition because there is an enormous market for these books and the resistance to acknowledge that black people and black Culture is in the mainstream is part of the problem. Black people are not a fringe or alternative grouping, we are a part of society.

These books are important , crucial and current that give insights into Black and African history and in particular black Britain history.

Selma El Rayah (Uk, 2020-06-28)

I'm signing because open access to books on Bkack history has always been important yet still denied.
A lot of the social issues today have been caused by the lack of understanding & fear of the unknown i.e. Black History, Black culture, Black society.
How can be morally appropriate to misappropriate Black history & culture in various forms, rename it as 'Urban' when it clearly has been appropriated from historically Black History & culture?
Therefore, denying society of a better understanding of Blacks' contribution to global history. Which would thereby reduce White society's fear & racial discrimination in all it's forms.
Come on, do the right thing Mr David Shelley, please republish 'The History of African and Caribbean Communities in Britain' & other similarly enlightening books & publications.
Use your position to enhance progress & understanding. Stand by your own words rather than appear to 'jump on the BLM band wagon' like so many other 'snowflake' organisations.
Thank you.

Theresa Hatchett (Hertfordshire, 2020-06-28)

I am signing this petition due to the ongoing systematic Racism that exists in the book publishing business which stifles black authors and prevents children of all races from being educated and informed. This is an absolute disgrace.

I'm signing because the publishing industry needs to wake up to missed opportunities to fill in the gaps highlighted by BLM and be at the forefront of encouraging and promoting BAME authors

Stella Hine (Worthing, 2020-06-30)

I believe not only children but some adults would benefit from reading this book. Years ago I lent the box set of roots to a friend and wen he returned it he was nearly in tears at the way the black people were treated by the white people. I appreciate some of routs was fictional but if you actually do the study it really paints a true picture of what happened and so will this book

I wish to see this book published and to be able to obtain several copies for my school. As a primary school teacher in an inner London school, I can categorically state that there IS a market and demand for this type of book. Children should be exposed to the history of their past generations who took residence and have resided in Britain.

Chedee Alexander (London, 2020-07-03)

#976

It is important that African and Caribbean children in this country has access to material that is representative of their culture, heritage and experiences.

There is very limited resources for this learning and in this current climate where black children’s history is distorted by injustice and oppression, there is something that celebrates their existence in a country where they were not supposed to survive.

Nicole Walsh (London, 2020-07-04)

#977

This book is essential for Black British History and for young education. Not only will it help to plug the gap between black history and Britain it will help young people nationwide to develop a sense of worth and belonging, while building cultural coherence and understanding in a multicultural society that is being torn apart from damaging and device rhetoric. Things need to change, Mr Shelley can start with this book.

Patrice John-Baptiste (Hertfordshire, 2020-07-05)

Books, especially educational texts for younger audiences, are the 'most potent agents of change in the world'. You are the gatekeepers of said agents. I urge you to take immediate action in supporting, promoting and publishing vital texts which should be available to all.

It is unconscionable that Hatchett, UK would not publish such a book and then when they do take all of the sales royalties for themselves. That is the definition of stealing intellectually and actually. The only thing worse would be plagiarism.......
