Including Antisemitism Awareness Training in Freshman Orientation

As parents of a current student we are alarmed by the dramatic increase in anti-semitism, particularly on US college campuses. The creation of an inclusive community means that no person should be discriminated against or worse due to their race, religion, nationality, or sexual orientation. We know that Tulane takes this issue seriously and hope that they will follow thru with action to include anti-semitism training for not just new students, but all students.
Sadly, Tulane is not immune to this disturbing trend. There was an incident just this January where a junior student published a malicious article full of hate and misinformation. We have heard nothing about the consequences of this student’s very public and reprehensible actions. If her article had targeted a different minority group, there would have been severe and publicly recognized consequences. Tulane is a leader in the higher education community and we hope that the administration will step-up as a leader to help fight this tide of anti-semitism as it has in so many other areas.

Antisemitism is the litmus test used to justify and condone all forms of hate speech and actions. Jewish people are disproportionately targeted for hate speech and hate crimes across this country and understanding how it happens and how to respond is critical.
