The Hilcrest swimming pools is one of the only public swimming pools available in SA. We should be trying to increase and not decrease the access to public pools. It is home to the yearly inter high gala and means much to schools in the area. It was also where my grandparents met and has very sentimental meaning to lots of Pretorians.Many avid swimmers like to train there as it is an olympic sise swimming pool and usually open early.
To lose this pool would be travesty.

I trained in that swimming pool from 1957 under a professional swimming coach and was a member of the Hillcrest Swimming Club. I represented senior NTvl swimming at the SA Swimming Championships 1960 to 1964, and was the team captain that last year. My elder brother (now deceased) nearly lost his life in a river and our parents said we must all learn to swim. My elder sister also trained in that pool and she represented senior NTvl for a number of years as well. Many children learnt to swim in that pool - a service provided by successive pool superintendents over the years. That service facility to further the sport of swimming, water polo, under water hockey at Hillcrest has produced many Springbok Sportsmen and women over many years and definitely is and remains providing a public service in the teaching of children to swim.Andre Van Der Merwe (Pretoria, 2023-05-18)
