The Coach and Horses has always provided Harrogate with a great local pub, with a very long and successful history of supporting local charities, many local breweries and other businesses, from local farmers to local hotels. The team at the Coach and Horses provided a very valuable asset to Harrogate during the tour de France and other sporting events.
Sam has, is and would be a great leader, to inspire and lead the team at the Coach and Horses, to be a growing asset at the service of the community and yet another reason to visit Harrogate.

I am very dissapointed with HBC. John Nelson has been the Licencee of the CAH for over 33 years without a blemish on his character or reputation. He makes one mistake which he now apreciates. No one was hurt and HBC decide to use ther nuclear powers and revoke his licence. The other options were 1. A warning 2. To suspended his licence for a month or two 3. Chop his hands off as if he were a petty criminal. Shame on you HBC. I hope John is allowed to retire with the dignaty that he deserves and that Sam is allowed to take over the licence unless HBC want to inflict more unnecesary pain on one of Harrogates finest businesses and families.Max Rostron (Harrogate, 2020-07-31)

This pub is an important community facet to the town and, having first opened in 1827, is very much part of Harrogate history.Olly Jones (Harrogate, 2020-07-31)
#223
This community pub is part of the town's history, having been there since 1827 and it seems harsh for a man whose run it without incident for decades to lose his licence and livelihood. The landlord of Huddersfield pub Rose & Crown served people actually in the pub during the lockdown.
A joint licensing visit was made by police and Kirklees Licensing, following numerous complaints the pub was still trading.
Last week he went in front of the Licensing committee and received a 28 Day suspension and was ordered to pay a fixed penalty fine.
Seems like a far more proportionate and equitable way to deal with it.
Not sure if he's run the pub for decades without incident and raised millions for charity?
Which also begs the question why didn't the police/council issue John a fixed penalty notice. Perhaps then he might have accepted his misinterpretation and that would have been an end to the matter?
Prior to the confusion of the lockdown, this community pub was being well stewarded by Samantha.

So great to see a proper community pub still thriving and maintaining a British tradition. People from all walks of life and very much part of the town meet there to socialise and relax. It would be a great shame to lose it. One of my first ports of call to catch-up with everybody when I'm back.Ceasar Grogan (Vancouver, 2020-08-01)
#238
I support local businesses, The hospitality trade has been the hardest hit in this pandemic without the need of heavy handedness by the police and councils. Give this Landlady a break! Yes, she did wrong but everyone deserves a second chance , especially before taking away her livelihood.Sharon Moore (York, 2020-08-01)
#239
This a truly outstanding pub with friendly staff and an always welcoming landlady. I am a regular visitor with my wife and friends as this is my nearest pub. It would be such a shame to see its doors permanently shut and more jobs lost for no fault of the staff. My business will not be going elsewhere. Please let this pub get back on its feet quickly so it can continue to serve our community and bring pleasure back in these difficult times to so many who have always enjoyed the best pub in Harrogate.Chris Jacks (Harrogate, 2020-08-01)

There's a legacy at stake here. A rich treasure that's been built up by the Nelson family over decades at a pub that's been standing on this site for nearly 200 years now. A shining example of how the traditional British pub can span the generations and still thrive to bring the community together. Let us hope the powers that be at the Council recognise just how much of a draw this fine establishment is to the town, to the community, to visitors far and wide and to local charities. The Coach & Horses has become one of the finest hostelries in the country and Sam needs to be enabled to continue the good work in preserving this much loved cornerstone of Harrogate and maintaining it as part of the future prosperity of the town.Bozo Briggs (Leeds, 2020-08-01)

This is the best Tetleys in Harrogate.A well run Pub. Never any trouble.
Also raises lots of money for charity.
The North Yorkshire Stasi, which also tried to close Nidd Gorge in March, should be ashamed, as should the Council.

Please reinstate the licence for the Coach, this has always been a very well run establIshment, i have never seen any trouble within the pub, it works tirelessly to raise money for local charities, provides employment for a number of locals (vital in the current economic climate) and draws in tourists from across them country and further afield.Harrogate should welcome back the Coach, it didn’t win Yorkshire’s Pub of the year for no reason.

I'm signing this petition because my main residence is in Harrogate, so I spend most of my weekends staying in town and what a god send the C&H is. To unwind with so many friends on a Friday evening and then experience lovely Saturday gatherings and a full-on Sunday lunch ...where else in the World can you get this wonderfully all-embracing homely experience. You get superb local drinks, served in the most apt and clean glasses, drinks at exactly the right temperature and service with a smile. You get the most delightful and wholesome food. You get ambience and friendship and get to learn a bit about Yorkshire, Harrogate and all it's wonderful people. You get the most courteous and attentive staff . You get spotlessly clean toilets and a feeling that everyone has put in such a great effort to make you feel at home and done everything for you to relax and enjoy yourself after a long and hard week at work. This establishment goes more than the extra mile to put its customers and Harrogate first and is probably the envy of many a pub that looks to give it's clientele the full-on local pub service. This is a veritable jewel in the crown for a town that's really struggling to maintain it's prowess as a visitor attraction and a generally nice place to live. Here we have a young lady in Samantha who's willing to dedicate herself to continuing and progressing this marvellous icon of Harrogate life. An icon that any other town would be so proud to possess. Please Mr Council, don't neglect what is good in your town and look to the prosperity and future of this once grand Spa. For to lose the Coach & Horses would be another giant step into obscurity. Think Harrogate, think wisely and grant this great local mainstay a continuation of it's license. There are local people employed there whose main purpose in life is to please their customers and promote this unique town. Without the Coach & Horses, none of them will be able to exert their unique and cherished talents.Tara Gunne (London, 2020-08-01)

it is a very good pub with caring licencees and who have done unstinting work to support Martin House for many years since I worked there as fund raising manager for the then new teenage unit appeal please let Samantha carry on the good work of licencee of the Coach & HorsesMaureen Burns (HARROGATE, 2020-08-01)

Along with my late husband Neil Worthington I was a regular at the Coach (known as Bob's, after John's father, the eminent and popular landlord for many years). All my friends were regulars there. I could not bear to see the pub close. Many would turn in their graves. Good luck John and Sam!Juliet Palmer (Knaresborough, 2020-08-02)

When I return to Harrogate although a Harrowgate is wonderful it’s placers like The Coach that are the star attraction great public house and restaurant a meeting place beyond belief don’t close this because they tried to help the community keep the spirits alive during these difficult timesJason Scott (Murcia, 2020-08-02)
#280
The Coach is an important institution in Harrogate and employs a significant number of staff, as well as raising large amounts for charity. HBC has allowed other well known establishments to remain open when they are well known for fostering the drugs problem in Harrogate. Councillors should quickly review this decision and allow Sam to take stewardship of the pub so that staff can get back to work!!Mark Renshaw (Harrogate, 2020-08-02)
#285
I have lived in Harrogate all my life and The Coach & Horses is a regular boozer to many of us. It is on of the last traditional family owned pubs left. Sam is very capable and runs it well.John Harr (Harrogate, 2020-08-02)

Being a regular for very many years would seriously miss the atmosphere of the town's premier hostelry.Robert Blackburn (Harrogate, 2020-08-02)
#290
i am signing because John Nelson has done more for Harrogate than any councillor. We all know he was wrong and has huge regrets but the sentence was harsh and draconian and completely at odds for a licensee who has had an unblemished record. A typical example of the overweening, overpaid, overpensioned workshy public officials led by inept and out of touch Councillors.john hardman (Harrogate, 2020-08-02)
#294
Sam has been doing a great job of running the Coach & Horses in her fathers absence(s)Chris Beasley (Harrogate, 2020-08-02)

This is more than pub, it’s a hub in the community. There are not many pubs left like this in the UK. Their charity work for a Children’s Hospice is fantastic!! I can’t name another pub who are so generous to a local charity.David Hall (Harrogate, 2020-08-03)
#305
My brother made a terrible mistake, of that we are all clear and in no doubt, however Sam and the customers should not also be punished for this.Sam has a proven track record of managing this establishment correctly and should now be allowed to fully take on the responsibility of the license.
I am immensely proud of what she has achieved so far, and I know that this is only just the start of what could be for the Coach & Horses, so please do not deny her and the pub the opportunity to make a difference to our community.
Sarah Nelson (Harrogate, 2020-08-03)

#325
Favourite pub when I come back to my home town. Ludicrous that they closed it in the first place. This pub employs many people in the area and raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity. Outrageous that the nanny state can enforce such an ill-proportionate measure for an error of judgment in times of confusion and uncertainty. Just open the bloody pub for god sake that’s what the people want!Jake Butler (London, 2020-08-04)

Harrogate needs the Coach & HorsesSimon Benn (Hunsingore, 2020-08-04)
#329
The Coach & Horses is a Harrogate institution that has served our great town brilliantly. They have raised more money for charity than all the Harrogate pubs put together. By taking away their licence has put many people out of work. I don’t think you could have handled this as badly as you have at this time. Unemployment is high and people are desperate for work and Harrogate council have made it worse. A fine yes but what HBC have done is disgusting. Threes a Crowd and Blues Bar also opened and are still trading. This is lunacy!Matthew Powell (Harrogate, 2020-08-04)

The Coach has been a bedrock of welcome and friendship since I moved to Harrogate on my own and I’ve always felt so comfortable with Sam and her amazing team in charge. As a qualified professional and business woman, I can vouch for the fact that Sam runs a highly professional establishment and is well qualified and worthy to be granted a licence.Catherine Boyle (Harrogate, 2020-08-04)

This pub is a corner stone of Harrogate and should remainLuke Harrison (Harrogate, 2020-08-05)
#337
The reason for my support is that as someone who has been involved in the Hospitality Industry at a senior level, and as a licensee, it is very rare to happen upon a truly well run establishment, the current blip being a one-off).Going in to 'the Coach', you always feel comfortable as you become part of this 'well oiled machine'-I have always been a firm believer in the 'competence = confidence = confidence' upward spiral, and this outlet is a beacon for others to follow/copy, but rarely to compare or surpass in terms of their operation.
There as been an unfortunate error of judgement, which should not be allowed to wipe out the massive contribution that this pub has made to the local populace, and I trust we can see 'the Coach' re-opened and re-established in its rightful place in Harrogate society/folklore.
Hugh Mantle (HARROGATE, 2020-08-05)

The coach and horses is an authentic pub serving excellent beers and wines and great food all in a extremely friendly atmosphere me and my wife make a pilgrimage from South Milford every couple of months to sample this brilliant venue and I sincerely hope to able visit this pub again after all that everybody has been throughNeil Appleton (Leeds, 2020-08-05)
#339
Having been a regular visitor to The Coach and Horses for over 20 years and enjoyed good company and friendship over that time I feel it would be tragic to close down an icon of the area.I was and still am a personal friend of both a Bob and John Nelson who have for many year run a wonderful establishment.
It is a shame that John is apparently suffering from mental illness which has caused the recent problem.
However,Sam has proved to be a highly respected manager and with a John stepping down would I’m sure make an excellent Tennant and responsible licence holder.
I like many other a Coach and Horses regular would feel it a tragedy if the icon that is the “Coach”was not given the chance to restore its place in Harrogate’s future under Sam’s management.

I will welcome Sam as the licences of the Coach and Horses, hard working , passionate, and a central figure in Harrogate society. The coach is a networking hub for business, social interaction, and the epitome of a warm and welcoming public house that has so much history behind it. A fundraising portal that brings so much pleasure to so many residents and visitors to the town.Stephen Fieldhouse (Harrogate, 2020-08-06)
#353
Well run pub of the sort we need more of. I enjoyed a couple of take away pints whilst sat on a bench on the Stray. I can't comment on what may have been said to the Council Officers but permanent closure for an apparent first mistake is harsh on the pub and on the customers.Rob Edwards (Harrogate, 2020-08-06)
#355
The Coach & Horses is a traditional pub that has been enjoyed by so many people over the years and there are very few such pubs left in Harrogate. I would dearly love to see a licence to operate this fine establishment granted to Samantha Nelson who has, to date, done an excellent job as manager there.David Roberts (Harrogate, 2020-08-06)
#356
The Coach is a valued local resource. This might not be realised by the Harrogate Borough Council Licensing sub-committee members given that a maximum of only 4 out of 12 members actually lives in Harrrogate.Michael Fairweather (Harrogate, 2020-08-06)
#357
The decision to remove the license is clearly a move by the council to make an example of them. Furthermore the Police made a recommendation that the license be removed for breaches of Covid legislation, without issuing a single penalty notice to a member of the public, which is the highest level of hypocrisy! The council should be supporting local business not hanging them out to dry!Stuart Renton (Harrogate, 2020-08-06)

It’s one of the few true pubs remaining and yes they messed up but everyone deserves another chance !Iain Fenton (Harrogate, 2020-08-06)

This pub is very well known on the other side of the world In Australia as the best pie and peas in the universe. That, and a perfect pint served by proper Yorkshire people. Whenever I’m in Yorkshire I make a special trip on a Tuesday night to enjoy the brilliant food and hospitality. If the council close this pub I’ll be encouraging Australia to declare war on those rainbow coloured pc virtue signallers. I’ll bring a drop bear with me and let it loose in the council chamber - then we’ll see what these people are made of.....Dave Nesbit (Perth, 2020-08-07)

This is a unique pub in harrogate , not only one of the oldest , but as others have comented a home! Its the only pub , ive ever been to drop in and had so much community spirit and friendly ness.
The diversity is amazing all welcome by both the staff espcially Sam, and the local clientele, no body is turned away an. It not oftern you can stand shoudler to shoulder with a pauper and mulitimillionare and feel totally equal.
I would be very dissappointed if this community of people was denied a place to gather, otherwise it would disperse to the likes of the chain pubs.
As it has already been reported this is an unprecedented time, and i think the coach and its community feel stronger together.
I pledge my strongest support
Regards
Andy
