Request to the Honourable Gauteng Liquor Board to uphold the 500m rule

As concerned parents

An application was submitted for a "011/Baron" at Illovo Point, requesting approval for "a Pub/Restaurant liquor license alternatively such other liquor licence as the Honourable Board in its discretion may decide with the Secretary of the local committee of Johannesburg".

The premises is on Rivonia Road, in direct line of sight, 20 meters from the school boundary, across from the St David's Chapel, Rivonia Road entrances, Prep school playground, classrooms and sports field.

The applicant will occupy premises on the Ground Floor and this is in direct view from various points of the St Davids School grounds.

The premises has a direct pedestrian entrance and exit onto Rivonia Road.

Final National Liquor Policy, 2016, 1.6.8, states, "...liquor premises should be located at least 500m away from schools and places of worship...." unless the Honourable Liquor Board decides otherwise.NLA_Policy.pdf

An integral objective of the final National Liquor Policy  is to adress the socio-economic impact of alcohol abuse as detailed in the Executive Summary.

It is obvious the above clause (1.6.8) has been included with the intention to protect minors from the damaging socio-economic impact of Liquor abuse.

Should you wish to request that the Honourable Liquor Board uphold the 500m rule (point 1.6.8) of the Final National Liquor Policy, 2016, please sign and submit.

To the Honourable Board

This is in respect to the current application GLB7000011705 which is under review and for all future applications accross the road from the St David's Marist Brothers School, Inanda.
