Only nazis in Latvian legion were Arajs commando- group of Latvians that killed Jews in 1941. and was sent to legion in 1943. Others were forced to fight or wanted to get Russians out of Latvia. 16. march is day when we remember those guys who fight for free Latvia. We light a candle put flowers in front of Freedom monument and put little flag on our jackets. What's so wrong in that?

150,000 Latvians many of whom had been members of the Arajs commandos and auxillary police, killers who successfully managed to murder 80,000 Jews on Latvian soil between 1941-1942 joined willingly the 15th and 19th SS divisions, the 15th the most decorated out of all SS divisions.  130,000 Latvians chose to not join the Latvian SS but rather the red army and fight with the allies against the Nazis, these men have been derided by various Latvian politicians as being traitors.

 

IN TERMS OF HISTORY March 16 has a far more complicated history than you maintain.

The Latvian legion formed in the winter of 1943 was ,under Hitler’s orders ,formally established on March 16

th 1944 There is consensus amongst all Latvian historians that the day marks the only time, the two Divisions of the Legion (15th and 19th) fought together against the Red Army. Therefore, by making the 16th March a day to remember war dead, Latvians, (despite Latvian official protestations to the contrary), are making the day when Latvian volunteers fought in the 15th and 19th divisions of the SS an act of commemoration. As Israeli/Jewish critics have commented even if one takes the stance that the Latvian legionnaires were not criminals and that they were forced to fight for the Nazis, to commemorate the Legion is far from being a positive act and a far cry from a policy to GLORIFY them. Glorification of pro-Nazi armed forces during World War II has no place in a European Union / NATO / OSCE country.

 

And a little bit more history:

March 16th as a memorial day had already been established in 1949 by the organisation "Daugavas Vanagi" (Daugava Hawks) that united SS POWs, former soldiers and officers of the above-mentioned legion, stationed at the time in the filtration camps in Belgium, where they were detained as Nazi collaborators. It is noteworthy, that the conception of the Memorial Day coincided exactly with the day of remembrance for fallen comrades. In Latvia, the meaning of this date, disguised from the start as a general day of remembrance of the fallen soldiers, was gradually transformed into a day of glorification of the Waffen SS Legion. For the first time, the procession to honor the Legion in Riga, took place in 1988, but in Soviet Latvia, nobody dared to declare aloud the true meaning of the procession. However, as Latvia became independent, these processions transformed into festive celebratory marches praising the SS soldiers. The march’s route: from the main Latvian Lutheran Church towards the symbol of Latvian independence – Freedom Monument in Riga’s central square and along the way the SS are given flowers.

Question:

Do any of these men who march on 16 March and are honoured with the title 'hero' light a candle for the twenty five thousand Jews who were marched down Riga's streets from the Riga ghetto to Rumbula, shot and thrown in to pits using the 'sardine method'? Do you?

Латвия должна разъяснять свою историю международному сообществу, добавил глава государства. Он также признался, что недавно прочитал книгу "Воюющая память", чтобы освежить свои знания по теме легионеров."

Не пишу имя, т.к. в Латвии возможны репрессии за высказывания. Я просто скопировала статью о предложении министра юстиции Латвии, который представляет партию "Все Латвии", выступающая за депортацию русских и поддерживает прославление латышских участников СС формирований во время 2 мировой войны.

Лишение латвийского гражданства со временем может стать политическим решением, и тогда будет легче доказать нелояльность отдельных граждан к государству, считает министр юстиции Гайдис Берзиньш (VL-ТБ/ДННЛ).
Как сообщила пресс-секретарь Берзиньша Лига Адамсоне, идею о том, что лишать гражданства Латвии можно было бы политическим, а не судебным решением, высказала на проходившей в пятницу конференции "Латвийское гражданство в XXI веке" представитель Кабинета министров в международных институциях по правам человека Инга Рейне. А министр юстиции ее поддержал.

Однако в таком случае должно учитываться, как человек получил латвийское гражданство — путем натурализации или преемства, считает Берзиньш. Комментируя сказанное в интервью газете Latvijas Avīze министром культуры Жанетой Яунземе-Гренде, что неправильно, если человека нельзя лишить гражданства за его нелояльное отношение к государству, Берзиньш согласился, что за неуважение к государству следовало бы это делать.

В то же время министр признал, что пока гражданство легче предоставить, чем лишить его. Юридически во всем мире после предоставления гражданства отнять его у человека очень трудно. В ситуации с двойным гражданством проще, а если у лица одно гражданство, то оставить его без гражданства нельзя.

Министр иностранных дел Гиртс Валдис Кристовскис ("Единство") в частной переписке с латышским эмигрантом Айваром Слуцисом согласился, что "нельзя одинаково лечить латышей и русских", пишет портал pietiek.com.

Врач Айвар Слуцис известен своими националистическими взглядами. В электронном письме Кристовскису он написал, что "не мог бы лечить русских так же, как латышей". В ответном письме лидер "Единства" написал: "Согласен с твоей оценкой и видением", отмечает портал.

Слуцис пишет, что "русских в мире становится меньше, но Латвия — единственная страна, включая Россию, где русские идут вперед". В ответном письме Кристовскис полностью соглашается с мнением соотечественника, подчеркивая, что "Гражданский союз" "ни на секунду не отступал от защиты интересов латышей".

Переписка между Кристовскисом и Слуцисом велась 15 октября. Письма порталу передал некий неназванный пользователь.

Глава МИД опубликованную переписку пока не комментирует.

Foreign Minister Girts Valdis Kristovskis ("Unity"), in private correspondence with the Latvian emigre Aivar Slutsis agreed that "can not be treated equally Latvian and Russian," says Portal pietiek.com.

Doctor Ivar Slutsis known for his nationalist views. In an email Kristovskis, he wrote that "could not treat Russian as well as Latvians." In his reply the leader of the "Unity" wrote: "I agree with your assessment and vision", said the portal.

Slutsis writes that "the Russian in the world is becoming smaller, but Latvia - the only country, including Russia, where Russian go forward." In reply Kristovskis fully agrees with the opinion of fellow countryman, pointing out that the "Civil Union", "never for a moment deviated from protecting the interests of the Latvians."

Correspondence between Kristovskis and Slutsisa was conducted on October 15. Letters to the portal gave some unidentified users.

Minister of Foreign Affairs published the correspondence has not yet commented.

Теперь становится ясно, что скандал, который преподнесла Латвия к 60-й годовщине Великой Победы над фашизмом, назвав в книге «История Латвии. ХХ век» всемирно известный концлагерь Салапилс «воспитательно-трудовым лагерем», был неслучаен. Тогда эта книга вышла под патронажем президента Вайры Вике-Фрейберги, и многие подумали, что случилось «просто» недоразумение. Ведь в этом лагере у детей выкачивали кровь, они умирали – как его можно назвать «воспитательно-трудовым»? Однако похоже, никакого недоразумения нет. Министерство иностранных дел Латвии выступило с резким осуждением выставки «Угнанное детство: судьбы детей, угнанных на территорию Латвии, 1943 – 1944 годах», действующей в московском Государственном центральном музее современной истории России, как будто не было Саласпилса и тысяч маленьких, но реальных трагедий.

МИД Латвии осудил выставку за «фальсификацию истории и вводящую в заблуждение пропаганду». При этом внешнеполитическое ведомство почему-то утверждает, будто выставка служит интересам людей, которые хотят препятствовать налаживанию отношений между Латвией и Россией. Возникает вопрос: каким образом правда о трагедии, о фашистских концлагерях может воспрепятствовать налаживанию отношений между двумя странами? Только в том случае, если латышская элита оправдывает либо замалчивает преступления фашизма.

(1) Sapulces, gājiena un piketa dalībniekam šo pasākumu laikā ir aizliegts:
1) turēt pie sevis vielas, ieročus vai citus priekšmetus, kas pēc sava rakstura ir paredzēti vai var tikt piemēroti miesas bojājumu nodarīšanai cilvēkiem vai mantas bojāšanai;
2) būt apgādātam ar pasīvās aizsardzības līdzekļiem (ķiveri, kasku, bruņuvesti u.tml.);
3) slēpt savu seju zem maskas;
4) (izslēgts ar 03.11.2005. likumu);
5) izmantot bijušās PSRS, Latvijas PSR un nacistiskās Vācijas karogus, ģerboņus, himnas un simboliku (arī stilizētā veidā);
6) veikt darbības, kas ir pretrunā ar tikumību;
7) rīkoties tādā veidā, kas rada draudus sapulces, gājiena vai piketa dalībnieku vai citu personu drošībai un veselībai, kā arī ietekmēt tās fiziski.
(2) Pasākuma organizatoram un dalībniekiem aizliegts nogādāt pasākuma norises vietā priekšmetus, kas minēti šā panta pirmās daļas 1., 2. un 5.punktā, kā arī turēt tos pie personām vai transporta līdzekļos, kas atrodas tuvāk par 500 metriem no pasākuma norises vietas.
