Antikens kultur och språk är grunden för vår europeiska kultur och en sammanhållande kraft mellan våra länder. Bosatt i Frankrike, kan jag dagligen följa med hur de klassiska språken och kunskapen i den klassiska kulturen genomsyrar hela samhället. Planerna på att i någon mån minska undervisningen i grekiska och latin i de franska gymnasierna leddde helt nyligen till häftiga protester och kommer därför att fortsätta som tidigare. Grundlig kunskap i antikens kultur är en absolut förutsättning för att förstå dagens franska kultur och samhälle. Att frivilligt lämna oss utanför den klassiska europeiska kulturgemenskapen understryker bara att vi i Norden är barbarer.
