This is unfair to the group that has been supporting our community for over 50 years. We should always support our local groups as city to show community unity.Tash Johnson (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

I am absolutely disgusted by this decision. The fact that it has been decided, and must have been approved by multiple council is beyond belief. A local council so blatantly not supporting local. It's just unbelievable. Some serious questions need to be asked - makes me wonder if it is all above board? Who has connections in the council to this other organisation ?K Kitto (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

Comet Swim club are a valuable part of our local community having taught mine and many other children water confidence and skills. It is disappointing to hear the new contract for teach to swim at Kiwa pool has been awarded to a company outside of the district.Kelsey Williams (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

I am disappointed that Comet are not the Club chosen to provide the Learn to Swim programmehere in Gisborne. Also for the fact it has gone to an off shore company instead. Please reconsider this as Comet have a vested interest in our community and always have had.

I'm disappointed in the decision to hand the contract to a company out of this city let alone this country. With the recent cyclone disaster, comet rallied with the community to ensure lessons could continue and give our kids a sense of normality. Where was that same sense of community when the council made their decision? So much for 'support local' and helping our economy.Ariana Peneha (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

My 4 children have been part of this passionate swim club for over 9 years. I am devastated by this news for the club and our community, the smaller teachers such as Pat who will not be allowed to continue their incredible programmes with our Tamariki. If the Australian company offered a better looking package, why not propose to comet to rose up and do the same?
Disappointing news and breaks our trust in who is looking after our town.

This decision is so outrageous and ridiculous the council must reconsider their stupidity and save face!! If the price between the two applying were ‘that close’, the local option should of been awarded. Comet caters for all, from lower socio- economic groups and all Kura’s💞Jules Hansen (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

The Comet club have served this community, providing jobs, teaching tamariki to swim and giving back to the community - sponsoring tamariki, supporting quiz nights and fundraising with prizes and they have locally been involved for a huge amount of years - they have provided the service for our school that I am DP at, as well as for our own children. This decision is so disappointing when we have an outstanding service already that is local, and isn’t that the message that is put out there - “support local”.Amanda Owen (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

I support the local Comet Swimming Club, I grew up/lived in Te Tairawhiti for over 17 years and I wholeheartedly believe that the local community should get a say in who runs the programme that teaches our tamariki to swim, Comet has done a great job in all the years they’ve been teaching our kids to swim and they are a local company who has the community in mind and can relate to the community, I don’t believe overseas contractors can, nor do I believe they will deliver on their promise of “full immersion te reo swimming lessons” because they are after all a multibillion dollar company and gisborne is a small place that they have so suddenly taken interest in? (from what we have seen) I fail to understand why.Georgia Wanoa (Invercargill, 2023-06-06)

Local knowledge is priceless! Successfully teaching our tamariki how to swim for 65years at our local beaches makes sense, why change that? Plus the funding will go back to the community and not to an international company.Joe Oaul (Wairoa, 2023-06-06)

Gisborne is a community based city filled with dedicated people striving for the betterment of its people. The local people who live here do so to provide the best services and opportunities for its community. If they can’t they make it their commitment to do so. Electing to give something away to an outside interest rather than the local providers takes away all sense of community spirit. Comet Swim Club is part of our community and should not be ousted for the sake of dollars and services that they are committed to provide without question.Pam Brown (Gisborne, 2023-06-06)

I find it offensive that the council would give community putea to an organisation not only based outside of the community, but owned by a foreign entity. This is something that should be run by locals FOR locals. Comet is a part of Gisborne and knows the community and the young people so well - you can’t buy that. Giving a contract to a company that knows nothing of the town and its people, of the schools and the students that they are working with - that’s shocking, and truthfully, incredibly short-sighted. Gisborne is in a position that they should be building on every good thing that the community has - that’s true community development. Comet is the most deserving for the LTS contract. They have served the community for many years and taught so many such a needed life skill in Tairawhiti. As a past LTS instructor for Comet I know how tough it is working out of Elgin School for the club and the upkeep there is not easy but we did it to continue our service to the community.I feel that the panels decision to give the contract to an outsider because their tender had more "feel good factors", and makes them feel good. But you just have to listen to the noise Tairawhiti community are making here that backs up how wrong the decision is.
Councillors are voted in by the Tairawhiti people, they represent us. But unfortunately the panel of 5 have not done the right thing here.
