SAVE The Saint-Antoine Woods, meadows and wetlands

Considering that :

- natural spaces provide important ecosystemic services, such as temperature regulation, cleaning air and water, flood mitigation, etc.  

– science has demonstrated that at least 30% of an ecosystem should remain natural and undeveloped to maintain its biodiversity.

- in 2022, the Montreal Metropolitan Community promised to adopt the goal recommended by the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework (COP15): the conservation and/or restoration of 30% of natural spaces.

- significant funds are available to cities for the acquisition of their green spaces:            

• the Québec Trame Verte et Bleue program;
• the urban parks creation program of the Canadian government;
• the law on expropriation is currently under review, which will probably give more flexibility to municipalities

We ask that the City of Laval:

1.      Ensure that the Saint-Antoine Woods, including its wetlands and meadows, are rapidly added to the Interim Control Bylaw for natural spaces imposed by the Montreal Metropolitan Community.

2.      Take steps as soon as possible so that the Saint-Antoine Woods, including its wetlands and meadows, become an officially protected natural area, on a permanent basis.
