Save the Bay of Ancón/Salvemos la Bahía de Ancón

Tomen las medidas necesarias para que el proyecto de construir un puerto en la Bahía de Ancón (Lima, Perú), que promueve activamente la empresa Santa Sofía Puertos del Grupo Romero, no siga adelante. Es evidente que este proyecto no es de necesidad nacional y responde sólo a intereses privados de un grupo económico. Según estudios socioeconómicos y ambientales realizados, este proyecto rompería el equilibrio del ecosistema y la biodiversidad existente en esta bahía de aguas profundas y tranquilas afectando además seriamente las actividades turísticas, la pesca artesanal y los deportes náuticos. La bahía se convertiría en mar y tierra en una ciudad puerto con innumerables impactos que la población ribereña rechaza, especialmente porque existen otras opciones de ubicación de un puerto moderno de grandes dimensiones. 

La bahía de Ancón, por su geografía, es sumamente vulnerable a cualquier derrame o fuga de petróleo o cualquier otro contaminante,  especialmente en la zona donde se pretende construir el puerto. Buscamos promover el desarrollo turístico de la Bahía de Ancón apuntando a la creación de una ciudad balneario recreativo para toda la capital incluyendo a sus islas y lomas protegidas, sus riberas y playas, sus restos arqueológicos y otros atractivos, por ser una actividad generadora de empleo masivo.

Necesitamos que tomen acción cuanto antes denegando la licencia de construcción para evitar este grave atentado al medio ambiente y a las opciones de desarrollo integral de Ancón.

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, WISH TO REQUEST THAT

All necessary measures be taken in order to stop the construction of a port in the Bay of Ancón (Lima, Perú), a project which is actively being pursued by Santa Sofía Puertos, a private company belonging to Grupo Romero. It is evident that this project is not one of national necessity for Perú, and serves only the private interests of an economic group. According to various sociological and environmental studies which have been carried out, this project would break the ecosystem’s balance and the existing biodiversity in this Bay of calm and deep waters; it would likewise seriously affect tourist activities, traditional fishing and water sports. The Bay would be transformed into a port-city with innumerable negative impacts which the local population reject, especially because there are many other options  for locations for the building of a large modern port such as this one.

The Bay of Ancón, because of its geography, is extremely vulnerable to the spilling of oil or any other substance, or any kind of pollution of any form, especially in the area where they plan to build the port. All of this will also affect the local economy, which relies on traditional fishing, which is the source of income for hundreds of families, and will destroy the tourist potential of Ancón, which is an important source of revenue for its inhabitants.

We want to promote the tourist development of the Bay of Ancón, working towards the creation of a recreacional resort for all of Lima, including its surrounding hills and protected areas, its coasts and beaches, its archeological sites and  attractions, because we think these activities will be a source of employment for its inhabitants.

We need you to take immediate action by denying the construction license for this port, in order to stop this terrible attack on the environment and the development options for Ancón.
