Replace/Upgrade the Woodmere Stormwater Channel!

We the undersigned residents of Woodmere, Marlands and Witfield in Ward 92, Noting that:-

1.       The Ward 92 IDP included the following item for a number of years now - “Completion of the stormwater upgrades required in terms of the Storm water master plan including north of Buurendal attenuation dam and the rehabilitation of collapsed storm water infrastructure in Woodmere and Marlands”.

2.       Houses in a number of streets including Laurel Street, Coral Street, Hazel Street, Barbara Road and Oak Avenue, Woodmere have been directly affected by storm water damage including sinkholes first occurring about 40 years ago according to some residents. For the last 7 years the appearance of sinkholes has escalated and the required replacement of the infrastructure which has been promised a number of times has either been excluded or withdrawn from the Capital Expenditure budget every year since 2014.

3.       There is evidence of sewerage infiltration into the stormwater channel ending up in the stream alongside Keurboom Street.  

We therefore petition the Executive Mayor, Councillor Mzwandile Masina and MMCs for Infrastructure Services Councillor  Masele Madihlaba , for Water, Sanitation and Energy Councillor Tiisetso Nketle and for Health and Social Development Councillor Cllr Nomadlozi Nkosi through the City of Ekurhuleni Petitions Committee:-

1.     To ensure that the necessary capital expenditure to replace the storm water channel and refurbishment of  all related infrastructure be treated as a priority and included in an urgent adjustment budget.

2.     To undertake all repairs and maintenance required of the sewerage network.

3.     To ensure environmental and health damage as a consequence of infrastructure failures is dealt with.

4.     To keep all affected parties fully informed of the work to be done and progress to find solutions urgently.
