Prevent Aldi building on the former Dairy Crest site in Epsom
This petition is to register opposition to Aldi redeveloping the former Dairy Crest site in Epsom as a supermarket.
Pikes Hill and the surrounding area is not a retail area it is a residential area separate and distinct from Epsom Town centre.
Aldi are stating that the former Dairy Crest site was a "business area" however the site was used to store milk and milk float vehicles. It was a distribution point which is vastly different from the proposed supermarket that will attract huge amounts of traffic.
The 5 way junction is already a very busy “bottleneck” during rush hour and will not cope with the increased amount of traffic that a Supermarket would generate. It would be dangerous to locate a supermarket on the junction.
The surrounding roads (Church Rd, Pikes Hill, Albert Road, College Road, Pitt Rd and Grove Rd) will not be able to cope with the increased levels of traffic. Large stretches of College Road (Conservation Area), most of Albert road and large stretches of Church road and Pikes Hill do not have off street parking for the residents. This means that cars are parked on street day and night allowing for single file traffic only. There are already issues with gridlock due to the single file nature of these roads.
Building a supermarket on the former Dairy site will vastly increase traffic in these roads which cannot cope with the current levels of two way traffic using these residential roads as "rat runs".
This site is not fit for purpose for a supermarket as it is surrounded by narrow residential roads that cannot cope with the current level of traffic let alone an increase in traffic. There is already an Aldi nearby on the Kingston Road in Ewell so there is no need to create another in this residential area that is unfit for this purpose.
