Better news
2013-03-14 14:16:54It seems that Tesco have withdrawn their application to turn the New Wheel into one of their shops, citing bad publicity for them as their reason.
This has yet to be legally confirmed, but well done everybody. People Power does have a voice sometimes...

Email from Greg Mulholland MP,a CAMRA member
2012-03-29 13:20:56Dear Paul,
Thank you for your email and making me aware of this campaign.
Unfortunately under Parliamentary rules I am only allowed to take up casework on behalf of my own constituents, but please contact your local MP Ed Balls who should be able to provide some support directly.
For a long time planning law has failed dismally to offer adequate protection to
community pubs. Communities and local planning authorities are currently
powerless to protect wanted and viable community pubs from change of use into betting shops, pay day loan stores and supermarket metro stores.
As Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group this is something we have been fighting to change. This week the new National Planning Policy
Framework was released which contained some pro-pub policies.
The content of this Framework comes into effect immediately and should be adopted by Councils alongside their local planning policies. You can use this document as a legal tool to give leverage to your campaign. These key paragraphs might be particularly helpful:
"To promote a strong rural economy, local and neighbourhood plans should promote the retention and development of local services and community facilities in villages, such as local shops, meeting places, sports venues, cultural buildings, public houses and places of worship."
"To deliver the social, recreational and cultural facilities and services the
community needs, planning policies and decisions
should:
Plan positively for the provision and use of shared space, community facilities (such as local shops, meeting places, sports venues, cultural buildings, public houses and places of worship) and other local services to enhance the sustainability of communities and residential environments;
guard against the unnecessary loss of valued facilities and services, particularly
where this would reduce the community’s ability to meet its day-to-day
needs;
ensure that established shops, facilities and services are able to develop and
modernise in a way that is sustainable, and retained for the benefit of the
community; and ensure an integrated approach to considering the location of
housing, economic uses and community facilities and services."
Thanks again for getting in touch. I have looked at your website and it certainly looks a very well organised, strong campaign and I wish you all the best.
Kind regards,
Greg
